Aerial Lift Training |
Online | Anytime | There are four different types of aerial lifts. Articulating, Boom Truck, Scissor and Telescopic. Starting 11/20/13, this online safety training program serves as the first step towards obtaining an aerial lift operators license. It will also serve as retraining for current operators whose certification has expired. Please complete the lesson for each type of lift you will be operating. To receive the BBP-inclusive version, answer YES to the question “Do you work with human/NHP materials (including human tissue cultures)?” when you register for the training. Those who answer NO will receive biosafety training without BBP, so be sure you answer the question in accordance with your training needs. If in doubt, answer YES to cover all contingencies. |

Exempt Specimen Shipping |
Online | Anytime | The EHS Exempt Specimen Shipping module supplies required training for: -- Classifying non-pathogenic or “exempt animal or human (patient) specimens” that have no other dangerous goods associated with them such as chemical (formalin, ethanol, buffers, etc.) and -- Properly packaging them for shipping. To be in compliance with regulations for shipping exempt specimens, you must receive documented training every two years. You can be fined if you ship this type of material without being trained, or if your training has expired. Some exempt specimens must be shipped with dry ice. To ship with dry ice, documented training is also required. Take EHS Dry Ice Shipping training to satisfy this requirement and to learn how to ship safely with dry ice.

Contact EHS when you have dry ice shipping needs so that certified, trained shippers can ensure all packaging and documentation requirements are followed. Failure to follow Federal guidelines when shipping with Dry Ice can have serious consequences. Regulatory compliance is the responsibility of the individual preparing and shipping the package. Violations of dangerous goods shipping regulations carries both civil and criminal penalties, and fines exceed $25,000 even for a first offense. Hydrofluoric Acid Safety |
Online | Anytime | The EHS Hydrofluoric Acid Safety module is required training for all users of hydrofluoric acid (HF), and for those working in areas where HF is used. Both groups must be fully aware of HF’s hazards for their own safety. HF is a highly dangerous corrosive and toxic material. Work practices for safe handling and specialized training for emergency response, provided in this module, must be mastered by trainees prior to using HF, and strictly adhered to whenever using HF. Trainees are encouraged to contact EHS (231-3600) with any questions or concerns regarding the presence or use of this chemical in their research settings. EHS provides on-site consultations to advise and support research groups with their lab-specific HF safety practices; please call 231-3600 if you would like to schedule a consultation. Beginning August 1, 2020, we moved to a blended learning format. Students will complete the classroom portion online, then come to EHS and complete the skills verification at a scheduled time. The cost of Adult CPR, AED and First classes are $45.00, payable through VT Continuing and Professional Education. https://register.cpe.vt.edu/search/publicCourseSearchDetails.do?method=load&courseId=295106 Use the EHS Training Schedule to “Request a CPR Class.” You will be directed automatically to the CPE website to provide payment information. Do not send departmental ISRs directly to VT EHS for First Aid/CPR/AED-Adult training. When VT CPE informs EHS of payment, EHS will enroll you in the online class. Participants receive an e-mail link to the classroom portion. Once the classroom portion is completed, you will receive an email and be able to book an appointment for a skills verification. On your training profile, you will see an “Appointments” tab. The appointments tab shows upcoming skills sessions and allows you to select one convenient for you. Skills verifications take less than 1.5 hours. Upon completion, you’ll receive your certification by email. |

Failure to follow Federal guidelines when shipping with Dry Ice can have serious consequences. Regulatory compliance is the responsibility of the individual preparing and shipping the package. Violations of dangerous goods shipping regulations carries both civil and criminal penalties, and fines exceed $25,000 even for a first offense. Hydrofluoric Acid Safety |
Online | Anytime | The EHS Hydrofluoric Acid Safety module is required training for all users of hydrofluoric acid (HF), and for those working in areas where HF is used. Both groups must be fully aware of HF’s hazards for their own safety. HF is a highly dangerous corrosive and toxic material. Work practices for safe handling and specialized training for emergency response, provided in this module, must be mastered by trainees prior to using HF, and strictly adhered to whenever using HF. Trainees are encouraged to contact EHS (231-3600) with any questions or concerns regarding the presence or use of this chemical in their research settings. EHS provides on-site consultations to advise and support research groups with their lab-specific HF safety practices; please call 231-3600 if you would like to schedule a consultation.
