This program applies to departments or work areas at Virginia Tech that wish to take a proactive approach in reducing work-related injuries and illnesses. EHS may identify departments or work groups with high numbers of worker's compensation claims for which an accident investigation program must be implemented.

The objective is to familiarize departmental representatives with accident investigation techniues and tools, and provide support to EHS in the event of an incident.

Requirements

Personnel who will be performing accident investigations must attend EHS training. Each investigation should be conducted as soon after the incident as possible. A delay of only a few hours may permit important evidence to be destroyed or removed, intentionally or unintentionally. For an overview of the general process, click here.

The results of the investigation should be presented to departmental management upon completion to increase its value in safety education of employees and supervisors.
