Factors to Consider

Laser eye protection should be selected on the basis of affording the protection required to protect the eye against the maximum exposure anticipated while still permitting the greatest amount of light to enter the eye for the purpose of seeing. The following factors must be taken into account in any selection of specific types of eye protection:

  • Laser wavelength or spectral range at which protection is afforded.
  • Optimal density at that spectral wavelength.
  • Maximum beam power (W) to which the eyewear provides the protection for at least 5 seconds, preferably, 10 seconds, following noticeable melting or flame.
  • Curvature of the lens surface and the field of view provided by the design of the eyewear.
  • Ventilation ports to prevent fogging on full-face fitted protection.
  • Effect upon color vision.
  • Environment to be used.
  • Impact resistance.
  • VLT

Ignoring any of these factors might result in serious problems. And one should always be aware of the limitations of eye protection before making a selection.


Selection of Eye Protection

Step 1 – Determine the wavelength of the laser and the maximum viewing duration anticipated for the use of eye protection. From this information it is possible to determine the Maximum Permissible Exposure (MPE) of the eye for that wavelength and viewing duration. Contact the LSO for verification.
Step 2 – Determine the maximum irradiance (or radiant exposure) to which the eye may be exposed.
Step 3 – Determine the desired optical density. Optical density can be expressed in the following formula:

                                OD = log10(Ei/Et)
               
Where:
                OD = Optical Density
                Ei  = Incident beam irradiance (W/cm2)
                Et = Transmitted beam irradiance (MPE limit in W/cm2)

Step 4 – Review the available eye protection before making the selection as it will provide the information about the suitability of the eye protection for various wavelengths.
Step 5 – Make your selection of the design using the following categories of eye-wear protection available.

There are three main categories of the eye protection available:

Optimal laser safety eye protection for multiple wavelengths in one product. Features high visible light transmission.

Polymeric styles range from form-fitting goggles to sleek wraparounds. Filters include broad band, narrow band and alignment options.

Filter glass eyewear utilize state-of-the-art filter glass for maximum protection. Featuring high Visible Light Transmission (VLT) and increased color recognition.


Visible Light Transmission:

Visible Light Transmission is the percentage of light that passes through the lens and reaches the eye. For example, a lens with a visible light transmission of 20% allows 20% of the light to pass through the lens, blocking the other 80%.
Most people do not need lenses rated less than 10%. When working in the lab, lenses that are too dark can cause visibility problems.

Optical Quality

Optical Quality means the lens is free from distortion. Lines reflected in the lens will follow in straight lines the even contours of the lens, versus wavy, eye-straining distortions found in non-optical lenses. 

UV Transmission

The percentage of ultraviolet light that passes through the glass.
