It is Blacksburg's annual arts and crafts festival, and it will take place on Friday and Saturday, August 6 and 7, 2004. Admission is free. Mike is a professor of Agricultural and Applied Economics at Virginia Tech and has been the recipient of multiple teaching awards, including the Congressionally-sponsored 2002 USDA/NASULGC National Award for Teaching Excellence for all fields of Agriculture, Natural Resources, Human and Veterinary Sciences. His interactive teaching style is engaging, entertaining, and thought provoking. Mike should be able to spark some dialogue in the group about the economics of environmental stewardship. The lunchtime speaker on Monday is William "Jack" Davis. He is the author or editor of more than forty books in the fields of Civil War and Southern history, as well as numerous documentary screenplays. He was the on-camera senior consultant for 52 episodes of the Arts & Entertainment Network/History Channel series "Civil War Journal," as well as a number of other productions on commercial and Public Television, as well as for the BBC abroad, and has acted as historical consultant for several television and film productions, including "The Blue and the Gray," "George Washington," and "The Perfect Tribute." He has twice been nominated for the Pulitzer Prize in History, and is the only three-time winner of the Jefferson Davis Award given for book-length works in Confederate History. Dr. Davis is the Director of Programs for the Virginia Center for Civil War Studies. Jack is a highly sought out speaker and, whether you are a Civil War history buff or not, we think you will find his talk very entertaining. Tuesday's lunchtime speakers will be W. Robert Herbert. Bob spent 30 years in municipal government and is now a COTA Fellow with Va Tech. Mr. Herbert develops workshops, short courses and other educational programming for governments and public sector organizations like hospitals, health facilities and public safety groups. He works closely with the EPA to help governments and other entities work to implement Environmental Management Systems. Joining him will be Jim Horne from EPA's Office of Waste Management. June 10, 2004 We are excited about plans for the upcoming 2004 CUHWC and want to share some of our plans and news with you. Registration will be open Sunday, August 8th at 9am to 6:30pm. The Sunday golf outing will begin approximately 11am and will be held at Hanging Rock Golf Course, voted best in the Roanoke area. Also Sunday we will have Ecology Services Inc. presenting a radiation awareness course from 10-2. There is a small fee of $ 25 for the class, which includes lunch. Sunday evening at 6pm the traditional conference reception will begin. We have some great entertainment lined up and think you will find this to be an exceptional experience. Plan to be there for a good time. We received a good number of abstracts, thanks to everyone that submitted, and are pleased to announce all speaker slots have been filled. We have a variety of timely and relevant topics to be presented and we hope this will result in some thought provoking discussion. Our schedule for Monday is 8:30am to 4:00pm. We will begin the day with our keynote speaker, Dr. Michael J. Ellerbrock, an agricultural economist, who will discuss the ethics and economics of environmental compliance. We will also have a panel discussion on laboratory hazardous waste regulatory reform to be moderated by Gail Hall of Boston College. We do regret that our originally scheduled lunch time speaker, Dr. James Robertson, will be unable to attend, but we are very pleased to have Dr. William C. Davis, the Director of Programs for the Virginia Center for Civil War Studies, to speak to us during lunch. Monday evening we will be enjoying dinner at Virginia's Explore Park, where a 19th century village that will be brought to life just for us. The evening's entertainment will include traditional blue grass music, horse drawn wagon rides, and some 19th century personalities. Village interpreters will share with you a working blacksmith shop, gristmill, schoolhouse, farm, physician's camp, and river bateau all on the banks of the Roanoke River. On the way back to our hotel, we will stop at the historic Mill Mountain Star, overlooking the city of Roanoke and the beautiful Roanoke Valley and Blue Ridge Mountains. Tuesday's schedule is 8:30 am to 4pm. Our lunchtime speaker will be Bob Herbert, COTA fellow and expert on municipal government, which he has earned statewide and national recognition for nearly 30 years of public service. Bob will be speaking to us about the importance of environmental management systems. Tuesday evening will take a bus tour of the beautiful Virginia Tech main campus. Join us in visiting the home of the Hokies. We will stop for dinner on the lawn of the University Alumni Center where we will enjoy live jazz while we dine. Afterwards you can explore downtown Blacksburg and the Hokie nightlife or take a self-guided tour of campus. On Wednesday, Heritage Environmental Services is presenting an eight-hour RCRA class, free to the first 200 registrants. This class will meet the annual training requirement for 40 CFR 265.16 / 40 CFR 262.34(d)(5)(iii). We have an exciting conference experience planned for you in the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains.
